Keynote Speakers

Carla Rothlin Ph.D.
Dorys McConnell Duberg Professor of Immunobiology & Pharmacology
Yale School of Medicine

Carla V. Rothlin, Ph.D. is the Dorys McConnell Duberg Professor of Immunobiology and Pharmacology at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Rothlin is also the co-leader of the Cancer Immunology Program at the Yale Cancer Center. Dr. Rothlin studied Biochemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Buenos Aires, where she also performed her graduate studies under the direction of Dr. Ana Belen Elgoyhen on nicotinic receptors expressed in the inner ear. Following her Ph.D., Dr. Rothlin moved to San Diego, California and joined Dr. Greg Lemke's lab at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies as a PEW Latin American Fellow. Dr. Rothlin was appointed as an Assistant Professor in Immunobiology at Yale School of Medicine in 2009. Dr. Rothlin co-directs a research laboratory together with Dr. Sourav Ghosh (Professor of Neurology and Pharmacology). Their research program focuses on mechanisms that underlie the regulation of inflammation and the homeostatic control of immune function.

Ulrich von Andrian, M.D., Ph.D.
Mallinckrodt Professor of Immunopathology
Harvard Medical School

Ulrich von Andrian, M.D., Ph.D. is the Mallinckrodt Professor of Immunopathology at Harvard Medical School. He received his medical degree from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, where he also conducted doctorate research on blood-brain barrier dysfunction following brain injury. In 1989, he joined the La Jolla Institute for Experimental Medicine and UCSD as a postdoctoral fellow working with Dr. Karl-E. Arfors. His postdoctoral research involved the development of intravital microscopy techniques that led to the discovery of the multi-step leukocyte adhesion cascade in vivo. After a second postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Eugene C. Butcher at Stanford University, Dr. von Andrian joined the Faculty of Harvard Medical School in 1994. He was appointed to his current position in 2006. His scientific research is focused on the regulation and function of immune cells in health and disease. To this end, his laboratory employs intravital microscopy techniques combined with other experimental approaches to study the migration, communication, differentiation and function of immune cells in living animals.

Frontier Lecturer

Howard Chang, Ph.D.
Chief Scientific Officer & Senior Vice President Global Research
Amgen

Dr. Howard Y. Chang is Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Vice President for Global Research. He is responsible for leading all aspects of discovery research at Amgen. Prior to joining Amgen, Dr. Chang led a research laboratory at Stanford University focused on deciphering regulatory information in the human genome for disease diagnosis and therapy. A physician-scientist and board-certified dermatologist, he served as Professor of Dermatology, Genetics, and Pathology at Stanford and Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Chang is the winner of the Albany Prize, Lurie Prize in Biomedical Sciences, and NAS Award in Molecular Biology for discoveries of regulatory RNAs. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a serial entrepreneur having founded five biotech companies. Dr. Chang holds a M.D. from Harvard Medical School, a Ph.D. in Biology from MIT, and an A.B. in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University.
